The Indigenous Art Exhibition Area returns for its fifth edition at ART TAIPEI 2024, presented in collaboration with the Taiwan Art Gallery Association, the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Development Center, and Asia Art Center. This year’s exhibition features the works of four Indigenous artists: Etan Pavavalung, Ciwas Tahos, Ruby Swana, and Malay Makakazuwan.
The exhibition explores artists' distinctive interpretations within diverse relationships and cultural contexts. Ciwas Tahos explores cultural and gender identity, using her body as a medium to trace the experiences of linguistic and cultural displacement while seeking new forms of queer understanding. Ruby Swana draws on Amis culture to examine the mystical connections between spirituality and the divine presence in nature. Etan Pavavalung infuses his work with profound cultural identity, reflecting social and ecological concerns and offering personal introspection and broader societal reflections. Malay Makakazuwan combines installation art with natural materials, blending Puyuma culture with modern perspectives. Through traditional myths and the historical context of her tribe, she expresses contemporary societal reflections and her evolving sense of Indigenous identity. This exhibition features a variety of mediums and techniques, demonstrating the innovative practices and profound artistic exploration of Indigenous artists in a contemporary context.
