By combining Nihonga’s expressive use of space and the transparent qualities of acrylic paint, Mizuho Fukumuro’s paintings offer an abstract depiction of natural phenomena and the accumulated traces left by humanity as we live among nature.
Be it the scenery of 10,000,000 years ago or the scenery of today that is within our arm’s reach, Fukumuro captures the overlapping trails left by various perspectives and lines as they crisscross time and distance, exploring the relationship between herself and distant places in the process. Her 2023 exhibitions at Art Taipei and in New York, among other locations, were the subject of significant praise.
Fukumuro has long focused on motifs such as stratums of sea water, earth, or groundwater, creating artworks that depict unseen, distant locations and express the hidden blessings of nature.
Spur series, which symbolizes“footprints”or“traces,”began in 2020 and includes a variety of motifs, such as pane glass and mother of pearl. These works have shown a particular focus on the traces left by human beings on such objects. Through the act of painting, she attempts to capture the ways that the behavior and emotions of living things are intertwined with and accumulate within natural systems.
